Maynooth University students have a new reason to procrastinate their assignments this May with last week’s grand opening of The Midnight Melt. Serving up high-calorie, budget-friendly sustenance, the futuristic franchise aims to corner the undergraduate market by merging deep-fried comfort food with the crushing existential dread of impending deadlines.
Located conveniently adjacent to the main campus on Main Street, The Midnight Melt offers an innovative menu tailored specifically to the nocturnal, caffeine-dependent lifestyle of the typical Irish collegian. Instead of standard corporate marketing, the brand utilizes algorithmic panic. Their flagship dish, the “Thesis Destroyer,” consists of a bed of cheese-smothered crinkle-cut fries, topped with a battered sausage, and crowned with a generous handful of flamin’ hot chips. For an extra €1.50, patrons can upgrade to the “Repeat & Reset” meal, which comes with an extra-large energy drink.
“We really want to capture that authentic ‘4 AM study session’ vibe,” said CEO Barry McBland during the launch. “We’ve replaced traditional seating with rigid, back-breaking wooden stools reminiscent of the campus library. This way, students can experience the exact same physical discomfort while they eat, ensuring a seamless transition from studying to snacking.”
Students are already lining up around the block, eager for the sensory distraction. “It’s brilliant,” said Cillian O’Connor, a second-year Arts student frantically highlighting a textbook. “I can eat 2,000 calories of sodium and completely ignore my looming history paper in a setting that feels just like a seminar room. It’s like a warm, salty hug.”
Market analysts predict massive success for the chain, noting that the combination of dangerously low prices and high salt content is the perfect macroeconomic fuel for the student body.
